Larry C. Rains Sr., 85, was called home to our Lord on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Larry was born on December 22, 1940 in New Castle, Indiana to Robert and Rebecca Rains, along with his five brothers.
He served in the United States Navy from 1962-1966. After his years in the service Larry married his wife, Judy, on July 28, 1967. They had two sons, Larry Rains Jr. and Scott Rains.
Throughout the years, Larry operated a dry cleaning business, worked as a public service lineman for the Indiana Electric Company, as an electrician for The Continental Steel Company, and retired after 20 years from The Rock Tenn Company in Conway, Arkansas.
He was very hardworking, and even long after retirement found ways in which he could be productive not only for himself, but for others. Larry had many hobbies and talents, such as fishing and golfing, and playing a few pranks. He also loved the outdoors and traveled to many interesting places while camping and hiking across the country with his wife, Judy.
Woodworking was a prominent part of his life and one of the many examples of his talents. He was well known for his craftsmanship in creating unique birdhouses for family, friends, and local businesses.
Bluegrass was his music of choice, not only for listening, but for picking. Larry founded The Toadsuck Dulcimer Club in February 2015. What began with only three members soon became a thriving community, and a lasting impression of his influence.
Larry was a very outgoing person and led a full and interesting life. Along the way he met many people, such as Bluegrass legend Bill Monroe, Grandpa Jones from the show Hee-Haw, and Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson.
He also attended school with professional basketball player Larry Byrd. While preparing for the Christmas open house at the Governor's mansion, he had many conversations with the Governor of Arkansas. During his time in the Navy, he had the opportunity to fly in a hurricane hunter plane to Puerto Rico and play golf with Chi-Chi Rodríguez for a week. One day as he was working at the dry cleaner's, he noticed money swirling around with the laundry. He called the customers that brought the clothes in to return the money. They were so grateful that he notified them that they gave him complimentary tickets and an invitation to their concert. The band was The Rolling Stones. To which he declined, because he wasn't a fan of their music.
What he was a fan of, was his friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Rebecca Rains, and two of his brothers, Mike and Kenneth Rains. He has reunited with them all, as well as his life long friend since childhood, Richard Pitner.
Larry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judy; son Larry Jr. (Alicia); son Scott (Lisa); granddaughters Abbey and Sierra; and grandsons Noah, Gabriel, and Jacob.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Larry at Family Life Bible Church on Saturday, October 10th at 11:00am.
